The Fern Cape continues the series started by the Fern Socks and Wristlets. The cape is is knitted in the round using a cable needle. The lace pattern is also used in the Fern Wristlets and Fern Socks (Ulla 1/2015). It was adapted from Lesley Stanfield and Melody Griffiths’ book The Knitter’s Stitch Collection (stitch 129 Branching Fern).

With the exception of the purled edge stitches, the sections between the lace pattern repeats are worked in simple seed stitch. To create an equilateral triangle, increases are worked alternately at each edge.

There are three versions of the pattern: child-sized, shorter adult-sized and longer adult-sized cape. The first two versions take one skein of yarn, the third takes two. Gauge is not important as long as the resulting fabric drapes nicely.

Yarn and yardage
BC Garn Jaipur Silk Fino (100 % mulberry silk; 300 m / 50 g), 1 skein for child size or short adult size, 2 skeins for long adult size. Shade 41 (olive green).
Any lace-weight yarn may be used, for example BC Garn Semilla Extra Fino (100 % organic wool).

Gauge
31 stitches and 40 rows in stockinette stitch = 10 cm

Needles
2 mm cable needle (40 cm max.) or size to yield gauge.
3-3.5 mm cable needle, for casting off.

Other notions
Stitch markers, darning needle for finishing

Size
Child size: neckline 56 cm, hem 100 cm, depth 25 cm
Adult sizes: neckline 70 cm, hem 125 cm, depth 18 or 32 cm

Pattern
Cast on 128 sts (child size) or 160 sts (adult size) using a cable needle. Join in the round.
Work 3 rnds in twisted rib (k1tbl, p1, repeat -).

Begin lace patt according to the chart. The pattern repeat is 16 stitches. The child size has 8 repeats and the adult size has 10 repeats. Place a stitch marker to mark the end of rnd. Inc 1 st between each lace patt rep in rows 4 and 8 of the chart, at right edge of the section in row 4 and at left edge in row 8. Varying the location of the inc st makes the triangle equilateral and prevents the pattern from twisting. Work sections between lace patt reps in simple seed st, always purling the edge sts. (Simple seed st: alternate two rows of k1, p1 and p1, k1, repeating - as needed.)

Once 8 lace patt reps have been completed and there are 16 sts in each seed st section (+1 purled st at edge of lace), continue the lace patt without further incs. Continue the lace patt for 1-5 patt reps or until enough yarn remains for three more rnds.
Work 3 rnds in twisted rib (k1tbl, p1, repeat -). Cast off using larger needle.

Finishing
Sew in all ends and block lightly.
